Freedom is crafted by ones own willpower and inner self. Though Douglass is still a slave he is able to make his own living by hiring himself to Master Hugh. Even though he is still enslaved to Hugh Douglass has his own freedoms in the form of being able to do the work as he pleases as long as he makes enough to pay his master every week. He is on the line of being free and being a slave at the same time. Douglass exemplifies his freedom of working on his own accord by saying, â€Å"I was ready to work at night as well as day, and by the most untiring perseverance and industry, I made enough to meet my expenses, and lay up a little money every week† (221). This is not the true freedom that Douglass wishes but it is a degree of freedom that must not be overlooked easily. The little freedom he is allocated allows him to make enough money to escape from his enslavement. Generating ones own profit and working to live has its own freedoms, but it is not truly being free. Douglass claims, â€Å"Rain or shine, work or no work, at the end of each week the money must be forthcoming, or I must give up my privilege† (221). He is expressing the fact that at any point in time the few freedoms that he has can be ripped from him like a lion stealing meat from the bones of its prey. He may not fight back against his master, he can only sit there, letting everything he worked so hard to achieve be taken from him as he watches it disappear. If at any point in time your freedoms can be stripped of you, then you are not truly free at all. To be truly free one must allow themselves to desire that freedom at any cost. Douglass is able to endure the hardships of this labor because it provides a means, in the form of currency, to escape. His wish to be free is not as much a desire for physical freedom as it is a desire of inner peace of mind. Douglass comes to this realization after he has escaped and is at an anti-slavery meeting. He says, â€Å"The truth was, I felt myself a slave, and the idea of speaking to white people weighed me down. I spoke but a few moments, when I felt a degree of freedom, and said what I desired with considerable ease† (235). It is not until the moment he allows the freedom the seep into his soul that he truly becomes a free man. He is able to open up his mind and express his views and experience only after his desires to be free are accepted by himself and he truly sees the meaning of being free. Slavery and freedom are more alike than one would presume. As in this day and age, a family living in the ghetto is similar to a family securing only enough money to pay for their housing; both are living similar lifestyles of poverty and without any luxury. The difference is that one family is working on their own to earn and provide that housing while the other is just being given it. Slavery, in itself, is being dependent on a higher power to provide for you while you do what they tell you to do. Freedom is the ability to earn what you receive and having the peace of mind that you deserved it. Douglass worked hard to earn his freedom and supply for his own family on his own accord. Introduction to the Custom of Sati Sati or suttee is the ancient Indian and Nepalese practice of burning a widow on her husbands funeral pyre or burying her alive in his grave. This practice is associated with Hindu traditions.  The name is taken from the goddess Sati, wife of Shiva, who burned herself to protest her fathers ill-treatment of her husband.  The term sati can also apply to the widow who commits the act. The word sati comes from the feminine present participle of the Sanskrit word  asti, meaning she is true/pure.  While it has been most common in India and Nepal, examples have occurred in other traditions from as far afield as Russia, Vietnam, and Fiji. Pronunciation: suh-TEE or SUHT-ee Alternate Spellings: suttee Seen as a Proper Finale to a Marriage According to custom, Hindu sati was supposed to be voluntary, and often it was seen as the proper finale to a marriage. It was considered to be the signature act of a dutiful wife, who would want to follow her husband into the afterlife. However, many accounts exist of women who were forced to go through with the rite. They may have been drugged, thrown into the fire, or tied up before being placed on the pyre or into the grave. In addition, the strong societal pressure was exerted on women to accept sati, particularly if they had no surviving children to support them. A widow had no social standing in traditional society and was considered a drag on resources. It was almost unheard-of for a woman to remarry after her husbands death, so even very young widows were expected to kill themselves. History of Sati Sati first appears in the historical record during the reign of the Gupta Empire, c. 320 to 550 CE.  Thus, it may be a relatively recent innovation in the extremely long history of Hinduism. During the Gupta period, incidents of sati began to be recorded with inscribed memorial stones, first in Nepal in 464 CE, and then in Madhya Pradesh from 510 CE. The practice spread to Rajasthan, where it has happened most frequently over the centuries. Initially, sati seems to have been limited to royal and noble families from the Kshatriya caste (warriors and princes). Gradually, however, it percolated down into the lower castes. Some areas such as Kashmir became particularly known for the prevalence of sati among people of all classes and stations in life. It seems to have really taken off between the 1200s and 1600s CE. As the Indian Ocean trade routes brought Hinduism to Southeast Asia, the practice of sati also moved into new lands during the 1200s to 1400s. An Italian missionary and traveler recorded that widows in the Champa kingdom of what is now Vietnam practiced sati in the early 1300s. Other medieval travelers found the custom in Cambodia, Burma, the Philippines, and parts of what is now Indonesia, particularly on the islands of Bali, Java, and Sumatra. In Sri Lanka, interestingly, sati was practiced only by queens; ordinary women were not expected to join their husbands in death. The Banning of Sati Under the rule of the Muslim Mughal emperors, sati was banned more than once. Akbar the Great first outlawed the practice around the year 1500; Aurangzeb tried to end it again in 1663, after a trip to Kashmir where he witnessed it. During the European  colonial period, Britain, France, and the Portuguese all tried to stamp out the practice of sati. Portugal outlawed it in Goa as early as 1515. The British East India Company imposed a ban on sati in the city of Calcutta only in 1798. To prevent unrest, at that time the BEIC did not allow Christian missionaries to work within its territories in India.  However, the issue of sati became a rallying point for British Christians, who pushed legislation through the House of Commons in 1813 to allow missionary work in India specifically to end practices like sati.   By 1850, British colonial attitudes against sati had hardened. Officials like Sir Charles Napier threatened to hang for murder any Hindu priest who advocated or presided over a widow-burning. British officials put intense pressure on the rulers of the princely states to outlaw sati, as well. In 1861, Queen Victoria issued a proclamation banning sati throughout her domain in India. Nepal officially banned it in 1920. Prevention of Sati Act Today, Indias  Prevention of Sati Act  (1987) makes it illegal to coerce or encourage anyone to commit sati. Forcing someone to commit sati can be punished by death. Nonetheless, a small number of widows still choose to join their husbands in death; at least four instances have been recorded between the year 2000 and 2015. In both Lord of the Flies by William Golding and The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, blood is used to symbolize violence in man, whether it is portraying loss of innocence and the malicious urges of a corrupted heart or the deep guilt scarring an individual after a murder. The Tragedy of Macbeth uses blood as a symbol repeatedly throughout the plot. The play is about a young nobleman of Scotland named Macbeth. After a long day of fighting, Macbeth and another character named Banquo cross paths with three weird sisters. When the witches first spoke, they told a prophecy, â€Å"All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!†(1.3.48-50). After Macbeth learned his future, he and his wife plotted to kill the king of Scotland. Initially after the murder, Macbeth felt guilty for his sin, and uses blood to literally and symbolically show his guilt. â€Å"Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? No; this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, making the green one red†(2.2.59-62). Blood in this specific example portrays the intense feeling of guilt that Macbeth had. He believed that nothing would take the blood spilled from the murder off of his hands. This is very similar to how Jack from Lord of the Flies felt first about the idea of him killing the innocent. The first time the boys on the island hunted down a pig to kill, Jack had the opportunity to kill it but did not. This relates back to the guilt felt by Macbeth, as both examples show the characters feelings about bloodshed before they became killers. Both Macbeth and Jack seemed brave to anyone viewing them, but were scared of murder in the beginning. However, as both plots thickened, the characters changed for the worse and went on to kill more and more. After Jack killed the sow, he took her blood and wiped it all over his face and then proceeded to shove a pointed stick through her head and display her to anyone who looked. In The Tragedy of Macbeth, after Macbeth got over the guilt of his first murder he  then went on to kill an even larger number of people. Both Jack and Macbeth lost all of their innocence and let their violent, corrupted hearts take over. They grew more and more bloodthirsty, and their murderous natures became overwhelming to them. In fact, the craving to kill became so strong for both characters that they slaughtered the innocent, just because they could. In Lord of the Flies, Jack and his boys killed Simon and Piggy along with attempting to kill Ralph. The deaths of Simon and Piggy were results of Jack’s heart becoming more evil, and wanting to kill just to kill. Jack did not have to kill them. This is similar to how Macbeth attempted to kill MacDuff. The witches told Macbeth that he didn’t need to kill MacDuff, and his position on the throne was already sealed. They also told him that he needed to beware of MacDuff. However, Macbeth didn’t listen to them and wanted no more than to kill for the sake of killing. Macbeth went on to kill everyone in MacDuff’s castle, and he tried and failed to kill MacDuff himself. This resulted in the death of Macbeth. The idea of bloodlust and death was shown even before Jack or Macbeth committed murder. When Golding described the island that the boys were stranded on, the damage that the airplane did to the island was called a â€Å"scar.† Since scars are created from cuts, they bleed. Another example from Lord of the Flies is when Ralph plunges into the water for the first time. Golding described the water being warmer than blood, which gave readers the idea that bloodlust would become a very prominent image in the novel. In The Tragedy of Macbeth, blood and violence was seen everywhere. â€Å"And Fortune, on his damned quarrel smiling, showed like a rebel’s whore: but all’s too weak: for brave Macbeth- well he deserves that name- disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, which smoked with blood execution, like valor’s minion carved out his passage till he faced the slave; which nev’r shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, till he unseamed him from the nave to th’ chops, and fixed his head upon our battlements†(1.2.14-23). This example shows Macbeth actually being praised for his brutality, which shows that he already had a killer inside of him. However, Macbeth was not killing for personal gain at this point, but killed as a result of battle. Both in the novel Lord of the Flies and the play The Tragedy of Macbeth,  murder and the spilling of blood turned both the characters Jack and Macbeth into malicious, bloodthirsty killers. Blood was a symbol in both writings to show the evil and violent nature of mankind, along with feelings of guilt, loss of innocence, and bloodlust.
